Circadian Cetacean

This print came about as an entry to the Launch Pad's Dreams show, where the #1/15 print sold on opening night. The content is somewhat up for interpretation, as is the case with much of my work. The imagery was inspired both by my painting "Cucurbia" and an assortment of doodles from the development of the "Hand-Eye Coordination" screenprint.

From a technical perspective, the process I used was new to me. I used the photosensitive transfer method common to most screenprinters, but made my positives by hand using a combination of sandpaper, china markers and paint pens. The result was slightly less control, but much richer texture.

I chose cream Rives BFK paper for its texture, and because I wanted to print in white. The other two ink colors, a light blue-green and black-brown, are custom mixed.

Hand-Eye Coordination

Originally, I developed this image as a two-plate etching. Lacking an etching press, however, I decided to adapt it to screenprinting, and it was the first print I editioned in my new (current) studio! Unlike prints I have made since, the screens for this one were hand-painted, rather than using a photo-sensitive process. (For the non-technical, that means that it's absolutely un-repeatable.) Doing it that way gave it a really nice wood-cut feeling, which I enjoy.

"Hand-Eye Coordination" is a limited edition of 30 prints, because that's how many saleable prints (plus a few artist proofs) I got out of a stack of 50 sheets of paper. (My printing has improved since then.) It is printed in straight black and white inks on French Poptones "Tangy Orange" 100lb cover stock, which is not only saturated with great color, but they're also acid-free and include recycled material.
